Deep Fried Oreos…..

Well, I finally did it…my kids have been wanting to make deep fried oreos for a long time…and we finally made them!  They are one of those things that you know, before you even eat them, that you are going to have a stomach ache when you are done!  I made them with Oreos this time, but next time…I’ll use my favorite Oreo substitute…..Late July Organic Vanilla Bean cookies.  These are one of the best cookies out there!  I think they are better than Oreos and they don’t have all the artificial flavors and  colors or preservatives.  Oreos have so much scary stuff in them..but I caved and used them this time….to see if we had the flavor right….but next time……!!

Anyway, I looked up a bunch of recipes on the internet.  Most of them said to use Bisquick, which I don’t ever use…so I just used my own buttermilk pancake recipe.

The recipe said to freeze the cookies for three hours ahead of time….so we did that.  Then you heated up the oil (I used about a cup of oil in a small sauce pan) and started dipping the battered cookies into the hot oil…..I did this part..since hot oil is always a bit scary!

Nothing like frying up some cookies!  Each one had to cook for about a minute on each side.  They instantly looked delicious and disgusting all at the same time!  My kids were so excited..they wanted to instantly start eating them……but of course, I wouldn’t let them!

After we were done frying them all up, to add even more disgusting-ness..you sprinkled them with powdered sugar!  Needless to say, my kids loved them!  Though we aren’t sure how they are going to taste the next day…I wasn’t sure how to store them..in an air tight container or leave them out…..I’ll keep you posted on how the left overs are….

I cut this recipe in half.  It made about 25 cookies.

Ishmael Beah…..

I read Ishmael Beah’s book A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier and loved it.  Well, it always seems strange to say I “loved” a book that is about tragedy.  I thought the style of writing was straightforward and frank.  It instantly became one of my favorite books.

Then my daughter found out that he would be coming to her school to speak!  She is in Student Government and would be directly involved in the event!  What an opportunity.  They sold t shirts to raise money for his foundation, The Ishmael Beah Foundation.    Last Friday was the event and she got to the official photographer and meet him.  She had just finished reading his book and was incredibly proud to get the opportunity to speak with him!

Tuesday had fun making me “11 things I wish I could give you….and 1 thing that I CAN give you!”  I always love their creative gifts…makes me smile!  And once again, I wasn’t able to blow out all the candles!…but I still think I’ll get my wish!

Christmas Countdown….Day 21…Wonder

2009-12-21a.jpg

I don’t think there is anything better than the look of wonder in a child’s eyes at this time of year.  And a little bit of snow doesn’t hurt either!

This weekend we got so much snow…the storm of the century!  Wow, what fun!  And after playing in the snow, everyone had to have some snow cream!

12 years ago today…..

2009-12-17a1.jpg

Twelve years ago today, my oldest child, Tuesday was born.  She wasn’t born on a Tuesday…..that is the first question everyone asks when they meet her.  Her birth started on a Tuesday, but…it didn’t end til Wednesday.  She was going to be called Tuesday, no matter what day she was born. We hadn’t found a name that we really loved and kept thinking and thinking.  We had some cd’s around and looked at the Matthew Sweet cd with Tuesday Welds on the cover…and we both thought…what a perfect name.  I think in her lifetime we have met three other people with that name!

We took one look at her and knew she was going to be a perfect baby! And though I haven’t always been a perfect parent….she’s everything I could ever want…..kind, generous, caring, thoughtful, patient (most times!) and full of love!

Cat Shoes…..

Those are my cat shoes on the right.  I love them.  I used to wear them all the time…I don’t so much anymore.  When Tuesday was little, all she would wear was dresses..dresses..dresses..dresses….she just couldn’t get enough of them.  I desperately wanted her to have a pair of cat shoes.  I looked everywhere for a pair for her, but I never found them.  Until the other day…in the store..there they were…and I had to get them!  Except now she isn’t a little girl anymore..and she refuses to wear dresses…..and she likes them..but she says she will never wear them in public.  I told her that one night we are going out somewhere special and we are both wearing our cat shoes!

Growing and looking back…

I finally managed to rearrange the art room and drag the easel up from downstairs.  I have been meaning to do it for a long time now.  River has decided she loves to paint.  Every time she wanted to paint, it would turn into quite a mess….so the easel was the solution, but it is so big, I was afraid it would take up too much space.  But with some creative furniture moving….and grunting and groaning from the stairs..I was able to set it up.  She immediately loved it and set to work on a “masterpiece!”  After painting for a half hour and asking me every three seconds, if I loved it, and telling me how much fun she was having…she promptly finished and said, “Mommy, I never want to use this easel again!  I want to use my desk again!” And proceeded to yell and scream when I told her she had to use the easel to paint from now on!  Well, you just can’t win…..

While she was painting, I couldn’t help notice how familiar this “picture” looked…..I had to dig up some old photos from about 8 years ago…I should have put her in the same smock…..
