Deep Fried Oreos…..

Well, I finally did it…my kids have been wanting to make deep fried oreos for a long time…and we finally made them!  They are one of those things that you know, before you even eat them, that you are going to have a stomach ache when you are done!  I made them with Oreos this time, but next time…I’ll use my favorite Oreo substitute…..Late July Organic Vanilla Bean cookies.  These are one of the best cookies out there!  I think they are better than Oreos and they don’t have all the artificial flavors and  colors or preservatives.  Oreos have so much scary stuff in them..but I caved and used them this time….to see if we had the flavor right….but next time……!!

Anyway, I looked up a bunch of recipes on the internet.  Most of them said to use Bisquick, which I don’t ever use…so I just used my own buttermilk pancake recipe.

The recipe said to freeze the cookies for three hours ahead of time….so we did that.  Then you heated up the oil (I used about a cup of oil in a small sauce pan) and started dipping the battered cookies into the hot oil…..I did this part..since hot oil is always a bit scary!

Nothing like frying up some cookies!  Each one had to cook for about a minute on each side.  They instantly looked delicious and disgusting all at the same time!  My kids were so excited..they wanted to instantly start eating them……but of course, I wouldn’t let them!

After we were done frying them all up, to add even more disgusting-ness..you sprinkled them with powdered sugar!  Needless to say, my kids loved them!  Though we aren’t sure how they are going to taste the next day…I wasn’t sure how to store them..in an air tight container or leave them out…..I’ll keep you posted on how the left overs are….

I cut this recipe in half.  It made about 25 cookies.

Let the rain in…

When I was in high school, I went to a conference for the yearbook.  I was the photography editor and responsible for all the photos in the yearbook.  One of the points I remember them saying was, “let the rain in.”  I have remembered that quote my entire life….one of those things you don’t forget……you remember like it was yesterday.

I try to remember to let the rain…..but sometimes I forget.  The rain is a good thing…..something necessary for all living things…and you gotta let it in….because when you do…you realize how wonderful it is….

Mailboxes and letters…..

One of the River’s favorite things to do is to send and receive letters and items!  We have two mailboxes that we got from the dollar store….one is hers and one is for the family.  They have been decorated over and over again.  She loves to put little notes, drawings and items in the mailbox for the family, put the flag up and wait……until she receives something in return!  The other day, she wrote a little note to her daddy and put it in the family mailbox.  The next day she received a lollipop in her mailbox!  So, she promptly wrote her daddy MANY little notes…..hoping for you know what!

Now, normally she doesn’t receive candy in the mailbox, normally it is just little pictures, notes or stickers.  She loves sitting down and thinking about who she is going to send something to……and the anticipation of waiting for them to receive it and send something in return is just too exciting!

Rolypig Composter….

2010-03-22a.JPG

WARNING…THIS POST CONTAINS DISTURBING PHOTOS!!

Well, this weekend we did a little bit of Spring cleaning in the backyard and moved the Rolypig composter into his new home. River was very concerned that we hadn’t “fed” him yet.  Well, she finally got a chance to give him some “food”.   I have never composted before…so I am not sure what is best…..what you should compost and what you shouldn’t compost.  And I’m sure different composters work differently.  I read that in about 2-3 weeks the first chamber will be filled and we can begin the turning.  Then each week, we turn him one “flat”….and in 12 weeks..we will have some compost out his bottom.

Alright..I told you this post contained disturbing photos!  And that is disturbing……I think shredded waste is ideal…but sometimes you just don’t feel like shredding your waste.

River was sure there must be something in his bottom already…she just didn’t want to wait 12 weeks!  I will keep you posted on our adventures with the Rolypig!

Creativity…..

This weekend was my birthday….and Tuesday and Quinn were secretly making gifts all day Sunday….Quinn loves making little animals and people out of rocks…so I got a personalized rock person..yes, that’s me…..I know..I’m looking old….

Tuesday had fun making me “11 things I wish I could give you….and 1 thing that I CAN give you!”  I always love their creative gifts…makes me smile!  And once again, I wasn’t able to blow out all the candles!…but I still think I’ll get my wish!

Little Big Planet Sack Boy…..

2010-03-02a.JPG

My children love to read….they love to draw…they love to play outside….they love to ride their bikes…..they love to be creative…..and they love video games…I hate to admit it..but they do…..and right now they are obsessed with Little Big Planet….I don’t know much about the game..but what I do know is…it is based around a little popit or sack boy…and he is the cutest thing ever!  I had fun just getting him dressed and making him move and smile and laugh….and cry.  He is so adorable…so I just had to make him into a little applique…..

Now I have to turn this cute little sack boy into a woolie!

Recycled Chunky Crayons…Part Two……

2010-02-10a2.JPG

Well..It is a blizzard out…or so they tell me….so we decided to work on Quinn’s Valentine Day cards…..He wanted a star mold..not hearts (too girlie)…..and the only mold I could find had six stars….so we had to do it four times…in hindsight..I should have bought two molds..but I figured how often am I really going to use these molds…….

2010-02-10b.JPG

I think I lost count of how many crayons we took off the paper…I wonder if Crayola sells “unwrapped” crayons for craft projects like this…..I will have to check into that…..I would say each mold took about 3 crayons…and we did 24 molds….that’s only 72 crayons..it SEEMED like a lot more….(I like all the icicles in the windows in the background….)

2010-02-10c.JPG

Well…..then after doing all the lovely star crayons…..Quinn then had to make the actual cards…..we stuck the crayons onto the cards using two sided foam tape……they turned out great……now back to this blizzard…..
